Kathryn Jeter (Hill) Howard

Mrs. Kathryn Hill Howard, age 98, of Tarboro passed away on April 30, 2018.

She was born in Charlotte on February 22, 1920, the only child of Marie Jeter and Luther White Hill. When she was five the family moved to Atlanta where she attended Highland School, Bass Junior High and Druid Hill Senior High School. On May of 1942 she graduated from the University of Alabama where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.

In June of 1942 she married Lt. Charles William Knop a navigator in the 8th Air Force, WWII. In October 1942, Lt Knop’s plane, the Bad Penny, was shot down over Bizertts, North Africa. Kathryn moved to Tarboro in October in 1942 with her parents where her father was named president of Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company. On June 9, 1945, she married Romaine Howard, a native of Tarboro. They were the proud parents of Kathryn Marie “Katirie” Howard

(husband James G. Leach) of Washington, NC., Romaine Howard Jr. (wife Lillian) of Charleston, and the late Ruth Hill Howard who died October 25, 2001. Ruth was the wife of the later Paul Parker Creech of Raleigh.

Mrs. Howard is survived by four grandchildren: Lillian Marsh Howard and Romaine Howard III of Charleston, Luther “Luke” Howard Creech of Atlanta and Paul Parker Creech Jr. (wife Kelly) of Charlotte, two great-granddaughters, Kathryn Anne Creech and Madelyn Ruth Creech of Charlotte.

A Funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 2:00Pm at Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church followed by the visitation in the church parlor.

Memorials may be made to The Boy Scouts of America, Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church or the Edgecombe Memorial Library.
