Marit Jane Elizabeth Dorsey Vogel passed away on Sunday morning June 16, 2019 at the age of 92 years 6 months, in Tarboro North, Carolina. She had suffered a severe stroke two days prior to her death. She died peacefully in her sleep with her daughter Nancy Vogel at her bedside. Her other 3 daughters were able to call and talk to her prior to her death.
Marit Dorsey Vogel was greatly loved by her family and friends for her sense of humor, her wisdom and her kindness. She was always ready to be helpful. She was born on December 15, 1926 at her parents' farm on Glen Lake Michigan. She grew up there going to school and helping with the family farm, dairy and laundry businesses. She attended Central Michigan University.
She met her husband Richard Keith Vogel, M.D. of Toledo, Ohio at Glen Lake. They were happily married for 67 years until he died 4 years ago at the age of 92. They lived in Wauseon Ohio where her husband practiced medicine and where they raised their four daughters. Later they retired to Jensen Beach, Florida and Harbor Springs, Michigan. Eventually they resided with her daughter Nancy and her husband David in Greenville, North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her father Volney Dorsey, her mother Josephine Dorsey, her brother John Dorsey and her nephew James Dorsey, all residents of the Glen Lake area. She is survived by her four daughters Marit Elizabeth Vogel, M.D. of Good Hart, Michigan, Sally Ann Vogel Giles, M.D. of Auckland, New Zealand, Nancy Louise Vogel, M.D. of Greenville, North Carolina and Martha Jo Vogel, MS, RN, BSN of Brighton, Michigan. She is survived by 5 grandchildren. They are Katherine Colfer Reece of Harbor Springs, Michigan, Christine Colfer Schneider of Pellston, Michigan, Luke Neuberger of Auckland, New Zealand, Charles Giles of Berlin, Germany and Elizabeth Hannon of Lexington, Kentucky. She is also survived by four great grandchildren who are Evelyn Schneider of Pellston, Michigan, Lillie Reece of Harbor Springs, Michigan, Zara Neuberger and Jaxson Neuberger both of Auckland, New Zealand. She also is survived by her beloved brother James Dorsey and his wife Velma of Glen Lake, Michigan as well as her niece Christine Dorsey Shugart and her husband Dwayne of Glen Lake, Michigan and their son Matthew Shugart.
The family would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital in Tarboro for the compassionate care Marit received there. They would also like to thank the staff of Assisted Living at Fountains of the Albemarle for the kind and attentive care they provided Marit. They also wish to thank her primary physician, Dr. Balaji Pabbu, at the Monk Geriatric Center of the ECU Brody School of Medicine for his thoughtful and kindly service over the past 6 years.
The family plans a private ceremony celebrating her life and her beloved husband's life at the family farm on Glen Lake in September 2019 as she requested.
