Millon "Doug" Lewis, Sr. Obituary

Millon Douglas “Doug” Lewis, Sr., 78, of Tarboro, formerly of Knightdale died Sunday, May 27, 2018 after a long period of declining health. Doug was born in Knightdale on October 26, 1939 to the late Bessie Frazier Lewis and Gilliam Elvis Lewis. Doug graduated from Knightdale High School,

Class of 1958 where he excelled in all subjects and FFA. He married the love of his life, Doris Garner Lewis on November 1, 1959 and they settled down to farm and raise their family off Old Milburnie Road in Knightdale. In the farming off season, for a number of years Doug worked in Raleigh at Rogers Oil Company and White Oil Company. In 1987, Doug and Doris relocated and expanded their entire farming operation to the Conetoe Community, near Tarboro, where they were welcomed with open arms and made lifelong friendships. Until declining health limited his activities, his deep love of all things farming, especially tobacco and raising Black Angus cattle, NASCAR, the Conetoe BBQ Club and the Conetoe Ruritan Club, filled his life with great joy and contentment.      

 

Doug is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Doris Garner Lewis; children: Vickie Lewis Clay (David) of Wilmington and M. Douglas “Doug” Lewis, Jr. (Carmen) of Tarboro; grandchildren: Hannah Perry Hopkins (Lee) of Wendell, Trinity Lewis of Holly Springs; step-grandchildren: Jason Clay (Amy) of Youngsville, Scott Clay of Banner Elk, Matt Clay (Jillmarie) of Garner, Taylor and Austin Andrews of Tarboro; great-grandchildren: Eden and Eliza Hopkins, step-great-grandchildren: Ashlyn and Megan Clay, Caelyn Clay, Tryston, Carson and Harlan Clay; sisters-in-law: Pansy Garner Mitchell (Benny) and Jean Wall Garner; brother-in-law: Orlin Wilder; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved boxer: MaeMae.  

 

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Joe Ann Lewis Callahan and John Callahan; brothers-in-law: Ben, Willard (Gilbertine), Joel Jr., John (Doris), and Charles Garner; sisters-in-law: Sue G. Strickland (Eugene), Laura Faye G. Wilder, Helen G. Davis (James), Catherine G. Doan (Percy), and Mary G. Bunch (Colon).

 

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Carlisle Funeral Home, 701 Hospital Drive, Tarboro, NC 27886. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 to 10:45 am at Carlisle Funeral Home.

 

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 pm, Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Old Knightdale Baptist Church Cemetery, Second Avenue, Knightdale, NC 27545. L. Harold Poole Funeral Service in Knightdale, NC will assist with graveside service.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Eagles Baptist Church, 184 NC 124 W, Macclesfield, NC 27852 or Knightdale Baptist Church, PO Box 21, Knightdale, NC 27545.
