Pinetops
Mr. Milton Carlton, age 91, passed away on November 15, 2018 at Wilson Medical Center, Wilson North Carolina.
Milton Carlton was born and raised on a tobacco farm in Edgecombe County on May 20, 1927. This was the very day that Charles Lindbergh made his historical first flight across the Atlantic Ocean.
He joined the US Army in 1945 and served in Korea for two years along with his twin brother Hilton. He returned home to work with the telephone company for a brief period until 1948. In 1948, he joined the Pinetops Volunteer Fire Department and opened a hardware store with Milton Scott called Scott-Carlton Hardware. They ran the store until December of 1971. During a lot of this time he served as part time Town Manager for the Town of Pinetops. He got married on June 14, 1952 to the love of his life Violet Moore. They adopted a son, Ted on February 27, 1962. He started his law enforcement career as an auxiliary police officer in 1968. In December of 1971 he left the hardware business to serve as full time Town Administrator and Chief of Police for the Town of Pinetops. He served in these capacities full time for the next 25 years.
He has served as a deacon and terms of chairman of the deacons at Pinetops Baptist Church for decades. He has also served in the capacity of Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chief for the Town of Pinetops over the years. He coached little league baseball in the late sixties and early seventies. He and Violet delivered Meals on Wheels for the needy up until their late eighties. He also built ramps for the needy and handicapped along with other church members of Pinetops Baptist. He served for decades in the Pinetops Lions Club. He participated in numerous fund raisers over the years for charitable events and charitable organizations. He was a very loving husband and father who provided well for his family. He loved God, his country, his family, his church family and the town of Pinetops.
Milton is preceded in death by his parents Thomas Cabel Carlton and Ida Crute Carlton, siblings Lucille Carlton Cole, Lillian Carlton, John Cabel Carlton, Oscar Leonard Carlton, Lewis Daniel Carlton, Mary “Polly” Carlton Coleman Hume, Marguerite Carlton Phillips, Mae Dixon Carlton Pendergrass Underwood, Robert W. Carlton and Hilton Carlton.
He is survived by his Wife, Violet Moore Carlton of 66 years, Son, Ted (Becky) Carlton, Granddaughter, Amanda Carlton (Brandon) Edwards.
A Celebration of Milton’s life will be held on Monday, November 19, 2018 at 2:00Pm at First Baptist Church in Pinetops with the family receiving friends at the church Monday from 12:30 Pm until service time. The interment will follow in Pineview cemetery, Pinetops with Military Honors, as well as honors from the Pinetops Volunteer Fire Department and the Pinetops Police Department
