Edgecombe Co — Robert Lee Wooten, 84, died peacefully Friday, December 21, 2018 after a 4 year battle with dementia at the home of his son & daughter In-law ,Tony & Debbie Wooten in Hampton Virginia where he had moved to be cared for by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Margret, son Mickey, Granddaughter Candice, brothers William Amos, Louis & Donald Ray& sister Doris Mae and step-son Enoch Shelton. He leaves behind two sons Tony Wooten & wife Debbie, Bobby Wooten & wife Lynne, a daughter, Daniell Winstead & husband Blake, two step children Ben Shelton & wife Jean, Edwin Shelton & wife Patty, 9 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and many close friends ,family members and neighbors.

Robert Lee born the third of 5 children to Willie & Lillie Mae (Peaden) Wooten and raised in Edgecombe Co. NC, he worked for the State of North Carolina and later the Newport News Shipbuilding Company in Newport News Virginia before returning to his beloved Edgecombe Co. NC where he farmed for approximately 30 years until retirement. Robert Lee had a love for his family and baseball; so much so he named his three sons Mickey, Tony & Bobby after famous Yankee players. He worked 14 years as a pipefitter at the NN Shipbuilding Company, before returning to his hometown to be close to his family where he used his life’s savings to begin building his farming business of which he was most proud. Robert Lee not only took pride in farming, but truly relished the friends he made in the farming community. Over the years, his reputation led him to involvement in local and state politics where he supported, held fundraisers for and became friends with many candidates and representatives. After retirement he spent several years enjoying his sporting interest as a season ticket holder for both the Carolina Mudcats and Carolina Panthers.

Robert Lee Wooten will be sorely missed, please join with family and friends in celebrating his life at a viewing to be held the evening of Thursday December 27th at Carlisle Funeral Home from 6-8pm in Tarboro. A graveside funeral service will be held the following day, Friday, December 28th set for 12:00pm at Edgecombe Memorial Park.
