William Lewis Obituary

Tarboro

William (Bill) E. Lewis, 71, went home to be with his maker on October 6, 2018 at his home of 30 years.

His funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday at Carlisle Funeral Home with the Rev. Ricky Freeman officiating. Burial will follow in Queen Anne Cemetery, Fountain, NC.

Mr. Lewis was born in Edgecombe County to Robert and Bettie Lewis.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Linwood Lewis and Robert (Shorty) Lewis and his sister, Barbara Wells.

He proudly served his country honorably for 21 years in the US Army with many of those years overseas with the 82nd Airborne.  After his retirement, he fulfilled a long time promise to himself to obtain an Associates Degree in 1991 from Edgecombe Community College.   He later returned to federal service as a rural postal carrier here in Edgecombe County.  After over 23 years with the postal service, he retired at the age of 70.

Mr. Lewis was a man defined by laughter through family and friends.  He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father and grandfather.  You could find him with his brothers at car shows and bluegrass festivals or with his sons and grandsons wetting a hook.  He religiously chased his grandchildren from football, baseball and soccer fields to gymnastic floors and basketball courts.  He took great pleasure in providing shuttle services to many of these events for his grandchildren and their teammates.   Even with a full schedule, he still made time to attend his annual military reunions to be with his former brothers in arms.

Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife of 48 years, Chonlada (Charlie) Lewis; children, Johnny Lewis of Tarboro, Bobby Lewis (and daughter-n-law, Melissa) of Tarboro and Amanda Brantley (and son-n-law John Brantley) of Cookeville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Allison Brantley, and Jackson and Olivia Lewis; siblings, Jimmie Lewis (and sister-n-law Linda Lewis) of Tarboro, Tony Lewis (and sister-n-law Janet Lewis) of Tarboro and Peggy Gay of Sharpsburg; along with many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cougar Football Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 46, Pinetops, NC 27864 in memory of William E. Lewis.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Wednesday from 6 to 8 pm at Carlisle Funeral Home.
