IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alden Wayne
Hull
August 9, 1943 – July 2, 2023
Alden Wayne Hull of Tarboro, NC passed away on Sunday morning, July 2, 2023, surrounded by his family at ECU Hospital in Greenville, NC. He was 79.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at Calvary Episcopal Church.
Al was born on August 9, 1943 in Lexington, VA inside Stonewall Jackson's house, a temporary hospital after World War II. He was one of four children to the late Harry William Hull, Sr. and Winnifred Harris Hull. Soon after his birth, the family moved to Tarboro, NC where Al would stay and raise his family. He loved Tarboro, and was its number one fan.
Growing up in Tarboro, Al helped his parents with the family business, Williams Five and Ten. He attended Tarboro High School before going to Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, TN. After graduating, he went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a football scholarship and was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He transferred to Campbell University and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Al was a member of the The United States Army for two years in Korea, where he served as a military policeman. While in the service, he traveled throughout Asia and gained an affinity for both other cultures and photography.
After the Army, he moved back to Tarboro, and following in his father's footsteps, he became a business owner. His first business was his namesake store, Alden's Menswear in Parkhill Mall, and his second business was with The Joinery Company, a specialty woodworking business. With each one, Al's eye for style and craftsmanship offered a unique sophistication to a small, southern town.
Al married his wife, Connie Murray Hull of Spring Hope, NC in February 1973, after meeting on a blind date arranged by their friend, Carol. They had two daughters together, Marian and Elizabeth. Connie and Al were best friends and loved each other and their girls dearly. They recently celebrated their 50th anniversary.
In addition to Al's love of family, he was also a devoted Rotarian, serving as Secretary for many years, a member of the vestry and a lay reader at Calvary Episcopal Church, served on the Town Council in Tarboro, and was a lifelong athlete. Al participated in numerous triathlons throughout his life, ran six marathons, and was a cycling enthusiast, preferring his bike to a car most any day. While football was the stuff of his youth, Tarboro High School Football brought Al a huge joy in his older years.
It was impossible to attend a THS football game and not see Al Hull. If he wasn't announcing the game on the loudspeaker, he was taking photos on the sidelines, which he gave to the players as keepsakes.
Al was a lover of animals, and would stand up for those who were voiceless or outcast in ways that make most people uneasy. He lived the word of the Lord, and was glad to do tasks others would not. He chose to love people first, rather than judge, and while he occasionally had the mouth of a sailor, it was always in jest - and he was actually a great sailor who taught his girls how to sail and loved being on the water! There's so much more to Al's life than can be put into words or read on paper and that's why those of us who knew him are lucky.
Al was preceded in death by his older brother Harry William Hull, Jr. who he greatly admired and adored.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Connie, his daughter, Marian Hull Ribbens and her husband, Matthew Ribbens of Wake Forest, his granddaughter Elizabeth Ribbens, his grandsons Harris Ribbens and William Ribbens, his daughter Elizabeth Ellen Hull of Tarboro, NC, his sister-in-law, Marilyn Haufler Hull of Raleigh, NC, his nieces Meredith Lillian Hull of Austin, TX, and Marilyn Louise "Molly" Boothe of Raleigh, NC, and her husband Brian, his sister Joan Hull Rich of Versailles, KY, and his brother Edward Lawrence "Larry" Hull and Adrian Hull of Rich Creek, VA, nephew Edward Lawrence Hull, Jr, and his wife Jamie Penny Hull of Zebulon, NC, and his beloved cousin, Pamela McClure of Barnegat, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Calvary Episcopal Churchyard Trust, Calvary Episcopal Church, 411 E. Church Street Tarboro, N.C. 27886 or USA Cycling, 210 USA Cycling Point, Ste. # 100, Colorado Springs, CO 80919, or the charity of one's choice.
