IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alton Thomas
Strickland
April 16, 1938 – January 11, 2025
Alton Thomas Strickland, age 86, went to his new home on January 11, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be 11:00 - 12:00 PM on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at Webbs Chapel Church the funeral service will follow at 12:00PM with Rev. Stephen Duncan officiating the service. Alton was born in Wilson County on April 16, 1938 to the late Lawton and Mamie Strickland. The family moved to Edgecombe County in 1947 and farmed tobacco, corn and beans. Alton served in the Army and, after receiving a honorable discharge, returned home and married Doris Harrell. He worked at Long Manufacturing Company for several years. In 1963, he started a long career farming with his father in Stantonsburg. After his father's death, he moved back to the home place at Webb's Lake and farmed until he retired in 1998. He became a "garden" farmer growing vegetables, watermelons, cantaloupes, tomatoes and peanuts for family and friends. He also had a passion for making pecan and peanut brittle, pecan pies and chocolate covered pecans, becoming well-known in the community. Webb's Chapel had always been his "Home Church". As a teenager, Alton accepted Christ because of Ms. Alice Ellis taking him to Sunday School and Church. Alton grew in his faith and served as a Sunday School teacher for many years, sang in the choir, and served as an active deacon. He loved his family and his church family, and is now praising his Lord with the others who went before him.
In addition to his parents, Alton was preceded in death by his brothers, Kenneth and Billy; sisters, Margie Eaton, Cathryn Bridgers and Susan Owens; step-sister, Cleo Webb, and nephews, nieces and cousins.
He is survived by his loving wife, Doris H. Strickland, of 65 years; son's, Tommy (Kim) of Raleigh and Timmy (Lisa) of Fountain; his daughter, Tammy Brown (David) of New Bern; grandson's, Kesler (Aubree) of Raleigh, Justin (Heather) of Raleigh, Ethan (Brittani) of Macclesfield, Jacob (Whitley) of Macclesfield; great grandchildren, Waylon, Clinton, Wills, Ensley, and Matilda; step-sister, Carolina P. Webb of Macclesfield, and several nephews, nieces and cousins.
