IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Betty Ann
(Pitt) Dew
October 11, 1935 – November 24, 2024
Betty Ann Pitt Dew, of Tarboro, NC, passed away on November 24, 2024, at the age of 89. Born on October 11, 1935, in Pinetops, NC, she was the beloved only daughter of John Robert Pitt Jr. and Ethel Virginia Rivers Pitt.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her devoted husband, James "Tim" Dock Dew Sr., her brothers, James Robert "Bobby" Pitt and George Albert Pitt (Phyllis), and her son, John Gilbert Dew (Terri).
She leaves behind a loving legacy: her son, James "Bud" Dock Dew Jr. (Teresa); her brothers, William Bunn Pitt (Alice) and Louis Borden Pitt (Barbara); her granddaughters, Jaime Dawn Dew, Kim Dew Winders (Derreck), and Sara Dew Brady (Derek); and her great-granddaughters, Anniston Jewel Winders, Merritt Gray Winders, and Duvall "Dovie" Spears Brady, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Betty Ann was a longtime member of Pinetops Presbyterian Church and also attended McKendree United Methodist with her husband. In her later years, she found fellowship at Tarboro Church of God. She was an active member of the West Edgecombe Ruritanette Club, a passionate supporter of 4-H, and delighted in her time with her Red Hat Sisters, enjoying camaraderie and a touch of glamor.
In 1953, Betty Ann married the love of her life, Tim, and their bond was unparalleled. At just 18 years old, she boldly drove across the country to Monterey, California, to join him while he was stationed at Fort Ord. Tim's military service and professional baseball career fostered her own love for the sport, and she took great pride in seeing her nephews share Tim's passion and play with the same heart.
For 41 years, Betty Ann's devotion to Tim was unwavering. A natural nurturer, she dedicated herself to caring for her brother Bobby and instilled in her children and grandchildren a profound sense of empathy and acceptance, teaching them that being different is never being less.
After growing up as the only daughter and raising only sons, her heart's desire was fulfilled with the blessing of three granddaughters—her "Baby Love Birds"—and later, three great-granddaughters. She passed down life lessons with love and humor, teaching them how to cook, play piano, dress with grace, work hard, and embrace a little sass. She taught them to cherish family, honor their history, and always look out for one another.
As the family's historian, Betty Ann was the keeper of memories and traditions. She lovingly ensured that stories and values were preserved and passed to future generations. Humble to the core, she never sought recognition for her own accomplishments but took immense pride in her family and their shared history.
Betty Ann's life was a testament to love, resilience, and the joy of nurturing others. Her legacy lives on in the family she so deeply loved and inspired.
