IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Bettyann
Poindexter
July 28, 1934 – December 9, 2025
Bettyann Poindexter, 91, passed away at her home on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
She was born in Edgecombe County on July 28, 1934 and was the last of twelve children of the late O.R. Pollard and Mary Felton Pollard. Bettyann grew up in Tarboro, living there all her life except for the four years she lived in Raleigh with her husband of 61 years, the late E.J. Poindexter, while he attended NC State University on the GI Bill. Upon E.J.'s graduation, they returned to Tarboro to live while raising two children and later becoming "Gamma" and "Gar-Gar" to their grandchildren.
Bettyann spent her life involved in the community, volunteering as a "Gray Lady" at the hospital, grade mother in her children's classrooms, a Boy Scout Den mother, and a Girl Scout Troop leader. She was also active in the Tarboro Women's Club and Money Bags, and coached Angel's Holy Hoopskirt Girls Basketball team to the league championship.
Her favorite activities, however, were playing golf, where she was Hilma Country Club Ladies Champion for many years, and playing bridge, eventually becoming a Duplicate Bridge Life Master. Bettyann, Dorothy Barnhill, Lucy Brewer and Joyce Lamb were a tough team to beat. Bettyann was also very active in her church, where she sang in the Adult Choir, taught the 4-year-old Sunday School class, led the Sunbeams activity group, helped with the Children's Choir and Vacation Bible School, and served on numerous committees.
After E.J.'s retirement, they bought a motor coach and spent the next ten years traveling the country. Between their own travels and many trips with the Wolfpack Club, they visited all fifty states.
Bettyann lived a full and active life until she lost her battle with Alzheimer's. She will be missed by all that knew and loved her, especially her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Thomas Felton Pollard, Mary Vick, Frances Irene Alexander, Orlando Pollard, Jr., Joseph Pollard, Lester Pollard, Samuel Pollard, and Lynwood Pollard. She is survived by her daughter, Debby Poindexter of Tarboro; son, Everett John Poindexter, Jr. "EJohn" (Jeannie Anne) of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Marykatie Poindexter and Everett John "Rett" Poindexter III, both of Raleigh, and Grace Anne Proctor (Dawson) of Wilson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.
Visitation is scheduled from 1:00 - 2:00 PM on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, in the parlor of First Baptist Church of Tarboro.
A Celebration of Life Service will follow the visitation at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Tarboro.
Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, following the service.
