Obituary

Carol Jones Autry passed away peacefully on July 13, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and deep commitment to family, education, and community.

A proud graduate of Norlina High School, Class of 1961, Carol was a vibrant student leader. She was a talented pianist, cheerleader, varsity basketball player, and active member of the Glee Club. She served on the yearbook staff and as secretary for the Student Council, as well as for both her Junior and Senior classes. During her senior year, she was hired by the school administration as High School Secretary, earning $0.50 an hour. Carol's classmates recognized her warmth and talents by voting her Homecoming Queen in 1960, and honoring her as "Most Talented," "Best Sport," and "Best All-Around Girl." She was also named to the Dean's List of Outstanding Graduates in 1961.

Carol continued her education at Appalachian State Teachers College, graduating in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Education. She began teaching business courses at Henderson High School shortly thereafter.  Having impacted the lives of countless students over her 25-year career, Carol retired from teaching in 2006.

A devoted mother and grandmother, Carol is survived by her loving sons Robert Claxton Autry Jr. (age 54), John Timothy Autry (age 51), and William McCurry Autry (age 45); and by her beloved grandchildren: Haley, Sydnee, Savannah, John Claxton, Alexis, Ava, and Anna. She is also survived by her sister Joy Gums Floyd and brother Henry Lee Gums Jr.

She was preceded in death by Ada Mae Gums, Henry Lee Gums, Robert Claxton Autry, and Robert Edgar Jones.

In retirement, Carol cherished time spent at the family beach home—reading novels, soaking up the sun, and, most importantly, enjoying the company of her grandchildren. A faithful member of First Baptist Church of Tarboro, NC, she served her congregation through many years of Sunday School teaching and later by helping produce audio and video broadcasts of weekly services for local television.

Carol will be remembered for her unwavering support of others, her steadfast faith, and her joyful spirit. Her presence touched the lives of all who knew her—family, friends, students, and church members alike. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy lives on in the hearts she shaped with kindness, laughter, and love.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered—always.

Funeral Services will be held on July 17, 2025, at First Baptist Church in Tarboro, North Carolina. Visitation will commence at 1:00 PM, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 PM.
