Obituary

Diane Webb Scott, 86, passed away on May 19, 2025, at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham NC.

Diane was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, on April 10, 1939, to Prudie Mae and Albert Washington Webb. She spent her childhood and teenage years in Pinetops, where she developed lifelong roots and community. Diane earned her teaching degree from East Carolina College and went on to spend much of her adult life in eastern North Carolina, including Washington, Greenville, and later in the mountains in Boone. Diane formed lifelong friendships and memories everywhere she went.

After starting her career in teaching, Diane went on to run several retail stores including Scott's Clothing Store, Appalachian Accessories and Hang It Up. Though she always enjoyed owning and managing retail stores, her most cherished role was that of mother and being "Grandma Diane" to her 8 grandchildren. Her family was everything to her and she was so loved in return. Diane instilled a strong sense of family within her children and created such a happy and loving home. She had a special way of bringing everyone together, often at her parents' house in Pinetops for Sunday lunch, Easter Egg hunts and Christmas celebrations. As the children grew and had families of their own, she spent many hours going on family trips, cooking, playing games, celebrating milestones, creating crafts, and reading with her grandkids. She is famous across multiple states for her Chocolate and Cheese Biscuits – a recipe that she passed to generations and a few lucky friends!

She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Bessie "Lou" Griffin and Lynn W. Whitley. She is survived by her sister Brenda Jefferson, her children Christi Scott Bartman and husband Mark of Galena, Ohio, Susan Yancey and husband Jimmy of Durham, NC and Dwight Scott and wife Mary Shannon of Darien, Connecticut. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Aubrey Bartman, Nathan Bartman, Ashley Watson (Bartman), Hailey Yancey, Parker Yancey, Jackson Yancey, Carter Scott, and Sam Scott. She was blessed with many other family members and friends that were integral to her life. Diane has left a lasting legacy, and she will be deeply missed by all those that loved her and called her mom, sister, grandma, or friend.

A service to celebrate her life will be at Pinetops Baptist Church at 710 W. Hamlet St., Pinetops, NC 27864 on Monday, May 26, with the burial to follow.
