Dorothy Dickens Phelps, 82, passed away, January 10, 2021.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 15, 2021 at Sunnyside Cemetery, Scotland Neck, NC. The Reverend Stanley Buck will be presiding.
Dorothy spent the majority of her life in Scotland Neck. She was the daughter of the late Minnie Lillie Dickens and Norman Otis Dickens. She began working at the Dixie Theater in Scotland Neck, which was a landmark for many years. She then started working at Carolina Telephone where she retired after working 40 years as a secretary.
Dorothy was known as an excellent and generous cook and an accomplished seamstress. She enjoyed helping anyone she could with trips to the doctor or grocery store and having Sunday lunch with her group of special ladies. She attended First Free Will Baptist Church of Tarboro and was a member of First Baptist Church of Scotland Neck.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, James Earl Phelps, as well as her 4 brothers and 3 sisters. She is survived by their daughter Terry Dickens and husband David of Ayden; son Alan Phelps Esq. of Atlanta, GA; two grandchildren, Chris Dickens and Mathew Dickens of Ayden; a great grandson Spencer Dickens of Ayden and several nieces and nephews.
Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to the First Free Will Baptist Church, 3510 Western Boulevard, Tarboro, NC 27886.
