IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gordon Merow
Campbell
April 3, 1920 – August 5, 2024
Gordon Campbell, 104, of Tarboro, NC passed away on August 5, 2024. He was born on April 3, 1920, to Guy and Helen Merow Campbell. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Harriman Campbell, his brother, Perry Campbell and his Grandson, Michael Gordon LePera.
Gordon is a graduate of Rahway High School, NJ and Hofstra University, NY. He was a Merchant Marine and served in the United States Navy. His training in celestial navigation led to many night-time crossings of the Atlantic in seaplanes to avoid enemy detection in the darkness. These seaplanes were loaded with wartime supplies and soldiers. He chuckled when he recalled one huge box marked TP. One of his memorable flight destinations was the port city of Casablanca, Morocco.
After surviving WWII, his long-term career was in Flight Test at Grumman Aerospace, NY. He spent his vacations on his 30-foot sailboat, the Reynard, with his wife and family. In retirement, he loved to paint pictures of sailing ships.
In 1997, Gordon and Ruth retired to Tarboro, NC, where they won the hearts of everyone. Gordon became a prolific artist and an author of short stories.
Gordon is survived by his children, Patricia, Guy, Robert and Stephen. His grandchildren are Thomas, Jay, Jeremy, Joseph, Grant, Ashley and Caroline. Great grandchildren are
