"J.R." Maynard
December 3, 1929 – April 19, 2020
James Rufus "J.R." Maynard passed away on April 19, 2020 at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital,Tarboro, NC. He was Born 12/3/1929 in Clayton NC then raised in Smithfield NC until the family moved to Raleigh NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Bertha Maynard (Raleigh, NC) and sister, Dorothy Lee Maynard Riddle (Winston-Salem, NC).
J.R. is survived by his wife of 66 years, Peggy Lou Jones Maynard, and three daughters: Gail Maynard Boaz, Ramona Maynard Metts (Jack), and Lou Maynard King (Ted); six grandchildren:Ruth Tarleton, David Boaz, Hailey Desselle, Amber Metts, Cassie Reese, and Claire King; four step-great grandchildren and three great-grandchildren with another one on the way.
Graduating from Wake Forest College in 1952, J.R. entered the Navy Flight Program and received his commission and wings in 1954. Stationed at Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, FL with his new wife, Peggy, he served in a Multi-Engine Anti-Submarine Squadron and a Hurricane Hunter Squadron. After the Navy, J.R. entered a career in public accounting and eventually served as president of Telerent Leasing Corporation in Raleigh, NC before retiring in 1986.
Some of J.R.'s fondest memories included his and Peggy's experiences living at Topsail Beach, NC. Fishing on his boat, playing golf, volunteering with the EMT, and playing with his grandchildren made him a happy and fulfilled person. J.R. loved music and enjoyed singing. He was a talented tenor in many church choirs for most of his adult life and greatly influenced his daughters in music. With a song on his lips and forever in his heart, he was greatly loved and admired by all who knew him.
The family would like to thank All of the Staff and Associates at The Fountains at Albemarle for their love and companionship over the last 2 years.
A Celebration of JR's Life will be held at a later date, and he will be buried at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh, NC.
