August 13, 1952 – July 30, 2025
Junius Herritage "J.H." Koonce, 72, passed away unexpectedly on July 30, 2025. He was born in Edgecombe County on August 13, 1952, and later relocated to Nash County.

A passionate advocate for criminal justice and education, J.H. began his journey in law enforcement as a parole officer. In 2008, J.H. was honored with the Endowed Faculty Chair Award as chair of the college's Criminal Justice Department. His leadership was marked by innovation, integrity, and a deep belief in the transformative power of education.
J.H. was an avid collector of film memorabilia, particularly classic westerns, and amassed an impressive collection of vintage comic books. An alumnus of East Carolina University, he was interested in military history and WWII aircraft. Watching British mystery series on BritBox with his wife, Janis, was a favorite pastime of his. J.H.'s dry sense of humor and easy-going, affable demeanor were a delight to friends and family alike. He was a fun and supportive friend who never was too busy to lend a sympathetic ear, offer thoughtful counsel or share an amusing joke or story. Most of all, he took great pride in his children and grandchildren.
J.H. was proceeded in death by his parents, Junius and Susan Koonce. He is survived by his wife, Janis Harper Koonce of Rocky Mount, NC; brother, Edward Koonce of Raleigh, NC; son, Chris Koonce (Jennifer) of Pilot Point, TX; daughters Caroline Langston (Cody) of Clinton, and Sarah Koonce and grandchildren Ava Koonce, Hunter Koonce, and Trevor Langston.
