Mecie Badgett McHone, 100, formerly of Mount Airy, died October 31, 2021, at her home at The Fountains at the Albemarle, Tarboro, NC. She was born in Surry County, NC, on January 28, 1921 to Charles and Susan Key Badgett. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Roy W. McHone, her son, Steven L. McHone of Tarboro, and her five brothers and five sisters.

Mecie grew up in the White Plains community in Surry County and she graduated from White Plains School. She was the youngest of 11 children.

In 1947 Mecie married Roy and moved to South Franklin Road in Mount Airy. She lived there for 50 years. She was an avid homemaker and gardener. She enjoyed working with her hands, sewing and crafting, canning, preserving, and baking. Everything she worked on was done well. She was a member of the Mount Airy Home Extension Club and the Postal Workers Ladies Auxiliary. She had a beautiful home both in Mount Airy and in Tarboro.

In 1997 she and Roy moved to Tarboro to be near their son and his family. In 2014 she moved to The Fountains at the Albemarle where she lived independently and enjoyed the company of many special friends until October 2021.

She is survived by daughter-in-law, Joy Johnson McHone, grandson John Steven McHone and wife Jess, granddaughter, Mary McHone Van Staalduinen and husband, Ben, and three great-grandchildren, Judah McHone, Molly Van Staalduinen and John Van Staalduinen, good friend Mary Spillman, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at Skyline Memorial Gardens, Mount Airy, on November 20, 2021 at 1:00 p.m., Rev. Ben Van Staalduinen, officiating. Visitation to follow at the cemetery.
