Obituary

Norfleet Lane "Fleet" Sugg, age 99, passed away on April 28, 2024. He was born in Pinetops NC on June 29, 1924 to the late George T Sugg and Helen Bullock Sugg.  He was proceeded in death by his wife, Eva Tolson Sugg, a brother Dr. Woodrow B. Sugg and half-sisters Jean Gains and Cora Chellis.

Fleet is survived by his sons Dennis L. Sugg (wife Glynn), Barry T. Sugg (wife Brenda) and daughter Vicki Sugg Branch (husband Steve), half-sisters Josephine McConnell and Charlaine Holcombe.  He has eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

After graduation from South Edgecombe High School, Fleet attended Edwards Military Institute in Salemburg, N. C. He always had a respect for the military. After transferring to North Carolina State University, he was active in the ROTC.  He left NC State to serve in the U.S. Navy in World War II from 1944-1946. His ship was the U.S.S. Sabine. Fleet was in the Engineering Division. His battle station was shooting a 20 mm anti-aircraft gun.  He was awarded 3 battle stars and eight ribbons. He made lifelong friends during this time and looked forward to the annual ship reunions.

Fleet returned to NC State in 1946 and graduated in Agronomy in 1948. He later graduated from the Executive Development Program at UNC Chapel.

He continued his association with NC State serving on several committees including as President of the NC State Alumni Association and the Wolfpack Club. Always a Wolfpack fan! He wore red with pride.

Fleet served as Vice President of Planters National Bank and Trust Company, Executive Vice President of the NC Agribusiness Council in Raleigh, and CEO of the Peanut Growers Association in Rocky Mount. "Peanut Man" as his grandchildren called him. Fleet did enjoy boiled peanuts!

Fleet was active in sports. In high school, he played basketball and was active in tennis. He played semipro baseball for Pinetops in the Bright Leaf League.  Fleet enjoyed baseball and worked with the Little League baseball teams in Pinetops. He was a charter member at the Maccripine Country Club where he played golf for 25 years. At 99, he continued to follow Wolfpack basketball, Yankees baseball and any sport played by a grandchild or great grandchild.

Fleet was active in the community of Pinetops. He served in the Pinetops Lions Club and the Pinetops American Legion Post. He actively participated in organizing the Edgecombe County Military Museum where he continued to visit at age 99. He wore that cap "World War II Veteran." Still very proud of the Navy. In Pinetops, he announced the Annual Pinetops Christmas Parade for over 30 years. He also worked with the Boy Scouts there. The Pinetops Methodist Church was a very important part of his life as well as his wife's. They both spent time supporting the work of the church and enjoyed the fellowship. Fleet enjoyed people. He could talk to anyone. He would always ask "where are you from?" That would start a conversation of who was related to who. He would almost always know someone in that family. He had a good memory. At 99, he could remember where you were from.

A funeral service will be held at the Pinetops Methodist Church on May 2, 2024. Visitation will be 10:30 AM to 12 noon. The funeral will be at 12 noon followed by a graveside service at the Pineview Cemetery in Pinetops.

Fleet's family would like to thank family members, friends and neighbors for their visits, phone calls, prayers, and acts of kindness.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Pinetops Methodist Church at PO Box 13, Pinetops, NC 27864.
