Obituary

Rachel Corbett Summerlin passed away suddenly Thursday January 27th at Vidant Medical Center. Rachel was born in Pitt County to Arthur Corbett and Martha Forbes Corbett. The second of four children, Rachel had the benefit of growing up in a close knit, Christian family attending Dilda's Grove Free Will Baptist church.

Rachel graduated from South Edgecombe High School as valedictorian and always looked forward to class reunions. In 1953 she married Norman Summerlin, her husband of 47 years. After his death she never considered herself a widow.

Rachel was content being a homemaker, a farmer's wife, a mother, and a sister.  However, her most of relished role was being a grandmother. She never missed an event that a child or grandchild participated in. She was a woman of many talents. As a seamstress she fashioned everything from little league uniforms to wedding gowns. She was an excellent cook that didn't allow anyone to leave her house hungry. She was well-read on a variety of subjects but particularly knowledgeable of the Bible and aspects of her Baptist faith. She served her community by working with the Council on Aging, delivering Meals on Wheels and acting as a HOST volunteer just to name a few.

She was a faithful member of Webbs Chapel Baptist Church for 68 years where she willingly served in any capacity where she saw a need. She was an adult Sunday school teacher for over 25 years but her favorite roles were working with children. Rachel especially enjoyed crafting costumes for the annual Christmas program, helping in the nursery and assisting with baptisms.

Rachel was preceded in death by her parents and husband.  She was also preceded in death by her older sister Hazel C Stallings and younger brother Glenn Corbett. She is survived by her children, Beth S. Hill (Harold), Carol Ann Summerlin, Dennis Summerlin (Dana) and Mark Summerlin. Additionally, she is survived by her grandchildren Jessica Summerlin Pridgen (Taylor), Justin Morris, sister Margie C White and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  Rachel also leaves behind many special neighbors and friends who she considered a part of her family.

Funeral services will be held at Webbs Chapel Baptist Church on Monday January 31st beginning with visitation at 1:00 o'clock followed by the funeral at 2:00 o'clock. Burial will follow at Macclesfield Cemetery. While the family appreciates the outpouring of love and support, we respectfully ask that visitation be limited to the church and that masks be worn in order to help protect several family members and friends who are in fragile health.
