Richard A. "Coach B." Byrd, age 68 of Tarboro, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital.

At the time of his passing the family chose to have a memorial service at a later time due to Covid-19. Family will receive friends at Carlisle Funeral Home on Sunday, November 13, 2022 from 3:00-4:00 pm follow by a memorial service at 4:00 pm in the chapel of Carlisle Funeral Home.

Richard served his country in the U. S. Marine Corps reaching the rank of Corporal. After serving in the military, he received a Bachelor Degree of Science Health, Physical Education, Traffic Safety, Teaching certificate from East Carolina University. Richard taught and coached several sports at many high schools in eastern North Carolina. He was varsity head football coach at North Edgecombe High School, 1984, 1985, 1986,with a winning record of 33-6, NCHSSA 1A  runner-up 1984, NCHSSA 1A Eastern Champions and state runner-up,1985. He was chosen coach of year in 1A conference 1984, 1985, 1986. He also coached women's basketball at North Edgecombe High School with playoff appearances in conference and district 1984, 1985, 1986.

Richard touched the lives of many young people and adults in his 38 years of teaching and coaching. He enjoyed staying in touch with the many of his students and athletes, continuing to be a part of their adult life.

He enjoyed putting a smile on someone's face, sharing a joke or as he put it "I've got a true story for you".

He loved his son and daughter-in-law beyond words and was such as proud "Pop Pop" Byrd.

Richard is survived by his wife Marcia Byrd of the home, son Chris Byrd and wife Karli, grandchildren Jack, William, and Matthew Byrd, sister Anna Biernaki and husband Larry and Jackie Byrd, brother Doug Byrd, several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project or the St. Jude children's Research Hospital.
