Robert Lee Smith, 73, passed away May 17, 2023. Robert was born to Raymond Smith, Jr and Dessie Marie Peaden on July 13, 1949. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, and brother Raymond Earl Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Julia Dianne Mathis (Judy), children Paula Hathaway of Greenville, NC, Connie Smith Perry and Freddy of Johnson City, TN, and Lakey Lee Jones, Jr and Teresa of Wilson, NC; 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Also included is his cat, Tiny.

He served as a Supply Specialist in the United States Army between September 1969 through 1971 receiving three medals: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. After being honorably discharged he worked as a mechanic for Glenoit Mills in Tarboro, NC, where he retired.

His hobbies included shooting pool, fishing, horseshoes, and an occasional card game. He especially enjoyed spending time with friends, family and listening to country music. He was a simple man who provided for and loved his family with all that he had. He came to know the Lord Jesus Christ and now resides in glory.

Visitation will be 1:00 - 2:00 PM on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at Carlisle Funeral Home with funeral service following at 2:00 PM, officiated by Rev. Michael Bryan of First FWB Church, and followed by a graveside gathering at Edgecombe Memorial Park.
