Cape Carteret – Stephen Walter Harper, 78, passed away peacefully at home on September 8, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born on September 6, 1947, in Newport News, VA, he was the son of the late Joseph John Harper, Sr. and Mildred Miffleton Harper.
Steve was a devoted businessman and a hardworking farmer who enjoyed conversation and connection with others. A proud veteran of the U.S. Army's 173rd Airborne, he served courageously in Vietnam before returning to his beloved family—Above all, he treasured his family, his children, and grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Harper; children, Mary Liza Bacon (Dan), Dean Odham (Betty), and Margaret Davis (Ken); cherished grandchildren, Haley, Hannah Grace, Daniel, Eliza, Wyatt, and Henry; brother, Joseph John Harper, Jr. (Anne); sister, Susan Britt (Bob); and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Christie Harper.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, September 15, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Ben Burrows. The family will greet friends on Sunday, September 14, 2025, from 2-4 PM at Jones Funeral Home in Swansboro.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
