In Loving Memory of Vinton Earl Fountain, Jr.
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Vinton Earl Fountain, Jr., who left this world peacefully on Thursday, July 31, at The Cypress of Raleigh, at the age of 89. Born in Tarboro, North Carolina, to Rolande MacDougald Fountain and Vinton Earl Fountain, Sr., Vinton was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Vinton's life was filled with purpose, energy, and an unwavering zest for living. He is a graduate of Duke University, where he nurtured a lifelong love for learning and developed a deep and abiding devotion to Duke athletics. A proud Blue Devil, Vinton cheered with passion, loyalty, and joy, always finding ways to share his enthusiasm with others.
In Tarboro, Vinton managed several family businesses, including Tarboro Concrete Company, various real estate developments and a radio station. His business interests and entrepreneurial spirit led him to invest around the state.
Vinton was never one to sit still, he embraced life fully, skiing down the slopes of Wintergreen, Virginia, playing racquetball at the YMCA, and cruising the North Carolina waters by boat. His friends knew him to be kind and a good businessman.
He loved his family and hometown of Tarboro, NC especially Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church. Vinton is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Fountain of Raleigh; his five devoted children: Tracey Hall and her husband, Michael of Raleigh; Shepherd Mac-Dougald Fountain of Raleigh; Vinton E. Fountain III and his wife, Clayton of Wilmington; and Leslye F. Plummer and her husband, Brett of Raleigh; Michelle C. Brewer of Little Washington. He was a proud grandfather to six cherished grandchildren: Clayton Merritt, Mary Grigg Meacham, Perry Fountain, Layne Brewer, Mary Claire Bechler, and Fischer Plummer; his three great grandchildren: Alice Merritt, Dayre Merritt and Suzanne Meacham—each of whom brought immense pride and joy to his life.
A private graveside service for the family will be on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, followed by a memorial service celebrating Vinton's life at 1:00pm at Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church, 303 E. St. James St., Tarboro, NC. Family and friends are invited to gather and share memories following the service in Burns Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be made to Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church, 303 B. Saint James St., Tarboro, NC 27886.
