Adelaide Scott Obituary

Adelaide “Scotty” Lehman Scott, age 93, passed away on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Autumn Care in Nashville, NC. Born on August 25, 1929, in Kinston, NC, she was the daughter of the late Franklin Patrick and Emma Jones Lehman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Douglas Scott.

Adelaide graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High School in 1947.  She was instrumental in coordinating the class reunions going forward. The Class of ‘47 recently celebrated their 75th Reunion. After graduating high school, Mrs. Scott began her 38-year career at People’s Bank and Trust Co. She was a senior vice president of operations at the Rocky Mount branch when she retired in 1985. Adelaide was involved and served as chairman in many local and regional banking associations during her career.

She joined First United Methodist Church in May, 1950 and worshipped faithfully until her confinement at Autumn Care. While a member of FUMC, Adelaide led the weekly stewardship team counting the offering each Monday morning, served as president of the William Whitehead Class, served on the Finance Committee, participated in Bible studies, and served each Thursday as a Welcome Center volunteer. She loved her church and was devoted to its members and visitors. With her outgoing and joyful personality, Adelaide made quite an impression on many FUMC preschoolers and their families.

Mrs. Scott was a strong-willed, hard-working, and organized woman who was just as compassionate as she was giving. Adelaide traveled extensively over the years; and in her “heyday,” she participated in local and national bowling events and traveled to bowling tournaments around the country. She loved serving others and was active in various civic organizations. Even after retirement, Adelaide continued her love of giving back to the community and presided over the Community Hospital Auxiliary Board and served faithfully for over 25 years on the Salvation Army board. Her calendar stayed booked with her weekly coffee club, monthly retired bankers’ luncheons, and serving others by taking them to doctors’ appointments, stopping by to see a friend, or enjoying a day trip to visit family.

Adelaide is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who will cherish her memory; countless friends who will miss her deeply; and special friend, Norman Bass. She dearly loved her family; and to maintain that connection, Adelaide spearheaded family Christmas gatherings, annual family reunions, and was responsible for organizing and publishing the family cookbook, Cooking with the Joneses.

A Celebration of Adelaide’s Life will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Rocky Mount Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel (4454 Dortches Boulevard, Rocky Mount, NC  27804) with The Reverend David Joyner officiating.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation and thanks to the staff and medical team at Autumn Care for the love, care, and support extended to Adelaide during her stay there.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13
