Beverly Rollins Edwards

Beverly Rollins Edwards, 70, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on January 24, 2023 at the Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice House in Greenville, NC after a three-year battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

Beverly was born on July 15, 1952 in Wilmington, NC to Ferrell and Jinks Rollins. She attended Tarboro public schools all her life, and completed her college education at Peace College in Raleigh and UNC- Chapel Hill in 1974 with an undergraduate degree in elementary education. She soon went on to obtain her Master of Arts in Elementary Education, and a Certification in Teaching Academically Gifted Children from UNC-Greensboro. This enabled her, with a group of colleagues, to develop the Greensboro City Schools Curriculum for gifted and talented students. Beverly made her home in Greensboro, NC and taught elementary school for many years in the Greensboro and Durham areas, with most of those years teaching third grade at Greensboro Day School. Most recently, Beverly was awarded the prestigious James P. Hendrix Award for Excellence in Teaching by her colleagues at Greensboro Day School for her many years of teaching excellence, dedication, and love for her beloved students. She retired in 2019 after teaching “her children” for 43 very full and happy years.

She loved to travel. From Maine to see the whales, to Arizona to see the Grand Canyon, to the hills of Scotland and Ireland, and the birthplace of Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. With grants from Greensboro Day School, Beverly was able to travel the country to study the indigenous peoples of the American south and northwest, and to Kenya, Africa to study the African Maasai tribe so as to bring that knowledge back to enrich her students’ education in cultural diversity. Her creativity and humor, immense love for reading, all things Harry Potter and Star Wars, and her love for life will be remembered forever by all who loved her.

Beverly is predeceased by her father Ferrell L. Rollins, Sr., and survived by her mother, Jinks Rollins of Tarboro, NC, her brother Ferrell L. Rollins, Jr. (wife Kitty) of Rocky Mount, NC, her sister Loretta Rollins Langley of Tarboro, NC, many cousins, aunts and uncles, several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, and a multitude of friends in Greensboro whose friendship she absolutely cherished.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday January 28 from 1-2 pm at Carlisle Funeral Home at 701 Hospital Drive, Tarboro, NC followed by a memorial service at Carlisle’s at 2 pm. A second memorial service will be held in Greensboro, NC in the coming weeks—place and time to be announced.
