"Dale" Whitley Obituary

Nubron Delano “Dale” Whitley passed away on January 1, 2021 at The Fountains at the Albemarle in Tarboro, NC.

He was born in Halifax County in 1932 to the late Nubron and Della Draper Whitley. He loved to hunt and fish and was an avid outdoorsman. He proudly played basketball for the US Army and Atlantic Christian College and loved anything sports related to watch on TV. He worked for Royster Fertilizer for many years until his retirement in 1993 and could be found on the golf course after that celebrating multiple holes in one. Dale loved to travel and was especially proud he had visited all 50 states. He represented the state of NC in an early 1970’s agriculture exchange with the former Soviet Union and had fond memories of that exotic trip. He traveled extensively with his friends and family and especially loved to spend time down at the Hawksnest in Nags Head, North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Alma Adcock, LaRue Whitley Sparks and his beloved aunt Martha Matkins from Burlington, NC. Dale was married for over 30 years to Linda Miller Whitley. He was a wonderful step father to Lyn Stout and her husband Malcolm Brown, and leaves behind two grandchildren, Carder and Cullen Stout. He also cherished his nephew and nieces Vic Sparks, Susan Sparks Hoffman, Jenni Adcock Whiting, Laura Bashaw and Linda Adcock.

The family would like to give special thanks to Nancy Ruffner, his medical advocate for the last two years and the owner of Navigate NC and the Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing staff at the Fountains at the Albemarle for taking care of him through these difficult times.

Funeral arrangements will be made at a later date when it is safer to gather. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in his memory to Ducks Unlimited or the National Parks Foundation.

He was larger than life and loved people and connection more than we can ever convey.

“Grieve not, nor speak of me with tears, But laugh and talk of me as if I were beside you….  I loved you so….’twas heaven here with you….”    Isla Paschal Richardson
