Delton Johnnie “Dell” Lewis, 57, of Rocky Mount, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, August 28, 2023. He was born June 7, 1966 in Rocky Mount. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Alice Lewis.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his father, Gene Lewis of Tarboro; sister Mitzi Sentiff of Tarboro; brother David Lewis and wife Angie of Tarboro; nephew Gabriel Sentiff of Rocky Mount; niece Reagan Lewis of Tarboro; great-niece Lily Sentiff of Rocky Mount; and his pride and joy, his dogs Winston and Kate. Dell is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and scores of friends.
Dell was a kind, gentle, caring soul. He genuinely loved people and never met a stranger. He loved nature, had an encyclopedic knowledge of plants and flowers, and was happiest doing any type of related work, whether cultivating flowers in a greenhouse or simply mowing the lawn. He had a soft spot for animals, and throughout his life loved numerous dogs, cats, birds, horses, and even a green snake.
Dell graduated from Falls Road Baptist Church School in Rocky Mount, Class of 1984, and North Carolina Wesleyan College. He worked as a recruiter for Wesleyan before moving to Philadelphia, where he was a recruiter for Saint Joseph’s University and later manager of Rock Hill Farm. He was also an award-winning floral designer and operated his own business, Delton Designs. Dell lived in his beloved Philly for 30 years before returning to Rocky Mount in 2021 to be closer to his family.
Dell will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, September 9, at 11:00 AM, at Edgecombe Memorial Park in Tarboro, NC, with the Rev. Johnny Hendricks officiating.
Family and friends are invited to join Dell's family for lunch and visitation at Penders Chapel Missionary Baptist Church immediately following the service.
