Tarboro
George Franklin Whitehurst, 82, passed peacefully into eternal life Monday, September 16, 2019, after a brief illness. George was born on January 21, 1937 in Edgecombe County to William “Billy” Whitehurst and Maggie Davenport Whitehurst. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his two brothers, Thomas Whitehurst and Billy Whitehurst, and three sisters, Ruby Mayes, Doris DeVault, and Clara Dail.
George retired from Carolina Telephone/Sprint after 39 plus years of dedicated service. He and Nancy made their home in Tarboro where they raised their children and grandchildren. George was a faithful and active member of Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church where he has served as a deacon. He especially enjoyed providing transportation to church for Albemarle residents. He loved the social events at church especially those involving a good meal. One of the many ways he showed his love was preparing food and meals for his family. The extended family especially enjoyed the Thanksgiving and Christmas meals where he would arrive with a car load of food he and Nancy had worked on many hours before. His smile was infectious, and he loved to share a good laugh and a good story. George was generous in every sense of the word, sharing anything he had, including good advice. He was always a gentleman and taught his children and grandchildren how to show love with good deeds and a kind word. He cherished and loved Nancy and his dedication and commitment to her set an example of love that will live on with his family. He will forever be remembered as a humble servant of God.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Brown Whitehurst; son, George, Jr. and his wife, Bonnie; daughter, Pam and her husband Alan Johnson; four granddaughters, Sara Whitehurst, Hanna Whitehurst, Hope Whitehurst and Grace Whitehurst; one grandson, Timmy Whitehurst; one great grandson, Wyatt Whitehurst. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Betty Brown Stalls, and brothers-in-law Ashby Brown, Jr. and wife Linda, and Watson Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews.
