Gleenreus “Glen” Leual Hart, Sr.

Gleenreus “Glen” Leual Hart, Sr. was born on February 11, 1946 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina to the late Mable Hart Joyner and Paul Baker. He passed away March 13, 2020 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina. 

Glen graduated from W.A. Patillo High School in 1964, where he played basketball, baseball and was also Senior Class President.  He attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical (NC A&T) State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology in 1968.  Glen continued his post graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin in their Master’s Program.

Glen married Nettie L. Patrick, June 6, 1970 and from this union they were blessed with two children, Gleenreus “Gleen”, Jr. and Glenetris “Glee”. He gave his life to Christ and joined Eastern Star Missionary Baptist Church in Tarboro, NC.

Glen began his professional career teaching Social Studies, briefly, in Enfield, NC.  Thereafter, he was soon employed by Anaconda Wire and Cable in Tarboro where he was the Director of Human Resources.  He worked in this capacity through several company name changes for many years.  In the mid 90s, Glen and Nettie relocated to Greensboro, NC where Glen spent the latter years of his career working at his alma mater as a Director of Human Resources. He retired from NC A&T State University in 2007. 

Outside of work, Glen was actively involved in his community. Glen was very active in Rotary International. He led the chartering of the East Greensboro Rotary Chapter and served as its Charter President. For his distinguished service to Rotary International, Glen was awarded the designation as a Paul Harris Fellow.  Glen also served his community by working with the United Way of Greater Greensboro. Glen was the first person from NC & T State University to serve as Chairman for the United Way of Greater Greensboro’s annual campaign. Glen led a group of 48 loaned executives from various Greensboro companies in raising $13.1 million to help 33 agencies with United Way Contributions support. Glen took great pride in putting his leadership and motivational skills to the test by leading the training for the 48 loaned executives at the Center for Creative Leadership where his goal for the team was for “48 different personalities to become one, all with the same message” which was to raise a record amount of money so that the United Way’s three focus areas:  growing successful kids, caring for everyone’s health and helping people help them help themselves could be achieved. Glen believed that “it’s just as important for people to volunteer their time as make a donation.”     

Anyone who knew Glen knows he was an avid lover of sports. In his earlier years, he loved to play golf as well as softball in the Tarboro Industrial League. He even taught tennis lessons at one time. Glen also was a dedicated bowler, as he and Nettie enjoyed traveling throughout the southeast to compete in bowling tournaments. He won several tournaments and was awarded a league ring for rolling a perfect game with a score of 300!  However, basketball and baseball were his passions.  He played both sports in both high school and college, which is how he met Nettie.  As an adult, he officiated High School basketball in North Carolina for many years as well as community leagues. Glen was a Lifetime fan of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels and the Boston Red Sox.  If the Tar Heels or Red Sox were playing, he could be found in front of a TV watching. If he wasn’t watching sports, Glen loved to watch reruns of In the Heat of the Night and old western movies. Glen had a keen “sweet tooth” as he loved desserts of all kinds, but he had a special fondness for sweet potato pie and carrot cake.

Glen dearly loved his wife, children, grandchildren and family. To cherish his memories, he leaves behind his wife, Nettie Patrick Hart of the home; two children, Gleen Jr. (Kim), Statesboro, GA and Dr. Glenetris Hart Clyburn (Derek), Wake Forest, NC; four grandchildren, Makenna and Kennedi Hart, Londyn and Derek (Jr.) Clyburn; one brother, Dr. Alrundus Hart (Carol), Tarboro, NC; two sisters, Cherryle Thomas (Fred), Ave Maria, FL and Davita Harrell, Burlington, NC; and a host of syblings-in-law, nieces, nephews, other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mary Hart; brother, Frederick Joyner; beloved aunt, Martha Parker; and mother, Mable Joyner, each of Tarboro, NC.
