Hattie Jewel (Owens) Bullard

Hattie Owens Bullard passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at ECU Health Edgecombe Hospital, Tarboro, NC. She was surrounded during this difficult and heart-breaking time by her husband of 40 years, her 5 biological children, and her 2 nonbiological children.

Hattie was born September 2, 1943 to Eddie Owens and Jutry Louise Cox Owens. She is preceded in death by her parents, three brothers: John Edward Owens (Tom), Zadock Benjamin Owens, and Desmond Franklin Owens (Frankie); a grandchild Walter Scott Griffin (Lil Scottie); a great grandchild Cordellia Grey Joyner.

Those left to cherish her memory are husband, Billy Bruce Bullard (Honey); children: Donald Earl Webb (Tommy), Ann Webb Jefferys (Jeff), Rex Glen Webb (Angie), Susan Kay Webb, Michael Wayne Webb (Kathy), Michael Duncan Bullard (Sherry), Dale Mitchell Bullard (Nancy); siblings: Edna Elizabeth Savage (Nick), Stella Louise Davenport, Melvin Eddie Owens (Bonnie), Cathy Ann Williams (John), Paula Kay Roberts (Robert), Danniel Connel Owens (Diane); grandchildren: Vernon James Webb (Pam), Thomas Cole Jefferys, Lauren Webb Mintz (Kelly), Clayton Wright Webb (Lenora), Patrick Brooke  Webb, Allison Raine Webb, Susan Nichole Wooten (Heath), Tamara Joyner, Jessica Bullard Pierce (Carl), Nicholas Dale Bullard, born as her niece but chosen as her granddaughter Tammy Johnson Williams (James); great grandchildren:  Mathew Mintz, Lyza Mintz, Gracie Webb, Wesley Wooten, Buddy Joyner, Chase Pierce, Fletcher Bullard, Maverick Bullard, and extended with the same love to Paris Johnson, Sydney Johnson Puente (Alex) and great great grandson Isaiah; a special and dear friend Jerry Curtis.

Hattie had many many many roles throughout her 80 years with us:  Christian, Wife, Mama, Sister, Chef, Hair Dresser, Seamstress, Devoted Employee, Faithful Friend, and the list goes on and on! To sum it all up, Proverbs 31:10-31 (CEV) states: “A truly good wife is the most precious treasure a man can find!  Her husband depends on her, and she never lets him down. She is good to him every day of her life, and with her own hands she gladly makes clothes. She is like a sailing ship that brings food from across the sea. She gets up before daylight to prepare food for her family and for her servants. She knows how to buy land and how to plant a vineyard, and she always works hard. She knows when to buy or sell, and she stays busy until late at night. She spins her own cloth, and she helps the poor and the needy. Her family has warm clothing, and so she doesn’t worry when it snows. She does her own sewing, and everything she wears is beautiful. Her husband is a well-known and respected leader in the city. She makes clothes to sell to the shop owners.  She is strong and graceful, as well as cheerful about the future. Her words are sensible, and her advice is thoughtful. She takes good care of her family and is never lazy. Her children praise her, and with great pride her husband says, “There are many good women, but you are the best!” Charm can be deceiving, and beauty fades away, but a woman who honors the LORD deserves to be praised.”  We were truly blessed to have a GODLY Mama!

March 17th is designated as St. Patrick’s Day when leprechauns get their pot of gold. On March 17, 2024, Mama got streets of gold!
