Henry Ralph Webb, “Grandaddy Ralph” (Also known affectionately as “Gramps” to his great-grandchildren) was born the youngest of 3 children to Edna Hayes Webb and William Carl Webb on June 12, 1935 near Macclesfield in Edgecombe county, NC. As a child he and his brother helped their father farm tobacco. He was keenly interested in internal combustion engines and motorcycles since childhood. At the age of 14 he secured a job at a motorcycle dealership in Wilson and on a whim, joined a group of riders on a trip to Florida and back. Not being old enough to have a valid NC driver license did not deter him. In June of 1954, he married his wife Hilda Sue Tugwell Webb, and his son Ralph Dawson Webb was born in April of 1955. He served in the United States Army, and after an honorable discharge, began his career as an auto mechanic at B&M Chevrolet (Brinson Chevrolet) in Tarboro. After many years of service at Brinson Chevrolet, he took an auto mechanics teaching position at Edgecombe Community College around 1980. He always enjoyed riding motorcycles, auto racing, gardening, cooking steaks for Sunday lunch, and grilling the best BBQ chicken you ever put in your mouth. A man of few words, he lead by example, teaching us to treat people with respect, honesty, and decency. Gramps left us peacefully on the evening of February 7, 2024 surrounded by family and friends and was called to his eternal home in Heaven.
Visitation will be held 6:00 - 8:00 PM on Friday, February 9, 2024, at Carlisle Funeral Home.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother William Haywood Webb and wife of nearly 60 years, Hilda Sue Tugwell Webb.
He is survived by his son Ralph Dawson Webb, daughter-in-law Teresa Webb, sister Audrey Webb Owens, grandson Jason Webb and wife Ursula, granddaughter Dana Webb Walters and husband Bradley Walters, great-grandchildren Addison Webb, Alaina Webb, Colton Walters, Dawson Walters, Hayes Webb, Avery Walters, and nieces and nephews.
Our family would like to send our heart-felt and sincere thanks to all those who showed us such kindness and help during Grandaddy’s illness. A special note of appreciation is extended to Jennie Pollard, Ann Uhlman and Bobby Simms. May God generously bless each of you. You have put up treasures in Heaven.
Funeral service will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February, 10, 2024 at Webbs Chapel Church with Pastor Stephen Duncan officiating the service. Burial will follow at Queen Anns Cemetery.
