Herbert Dunham Day was born in White Plains, NY on May 5th, 1926 to Dr. Willis Bronson Day and Hazel Augusta De Mott. During WWII at the age of 18, Herb joined the Army Air Corps and served as an airplane engine mechanic in Havana, Cuba. After the war, he attended Colgate University, where he was a part of the Track and Swim team. Herb left with a degree in zoology and chemistry with the intent of becoming a physician. After two years of medical school, Herb decided to continue his education at Thunderbird School of Business in Glendale, Arizona. Graduating with his masters in Business, Herb relocated to Mexico City where he would meet the love of his life, Maria Teresa Serrano de Day (d. 2008). Six years later in 1973, Herb and Teresa decided to move their young family to Cincinnati, Ohio; less than a year later they moved to Tarboro, NC. Herb and Teresa found their forever home in our little town and lived here for 45 years.
Herb was an active member of Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church until 2018. He was a world traveller, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, one of the kindest souls you will ever meet, and an honest gentleman through and through.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Pat, his brother, Bobby, and his wife, Teresa.
To continue his legacy are his daughter Hazel, her husband, Rob, and their two children, Katherine Hope and Herbert Ross.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 12th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Carlisle Funeral Home and the funeral will be Monday, May 13th, at 2:00 pm at Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church in Tarboro.
