John (Jack) Pershing Bobbitt, Jr. age 77 of Blounts Creek, passed away on Monday, September 20, 2021 with family by his side of cardiac arrest as a result of COVID-19 complications.
A graveside service in remembrance of Jack’s life will be held at 11:30am on Wednesday, September 22 at Pineview Cemetery in Rocky Mount (761 E. Raleigh Boulevard) with the Pastor Tommy Privette presiding.
Jack was born in Rocky Mount, NC on February 04, 1944 to the late John Pershing Bobbitt, Sr. and Dorothy Robinson Bobbitt. He was a member of the 1962 graduating class of Tarboro High School. He continued his education at East Carolina University earning a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1966 along with a Masters of Education with a concentration in Biology in 1970.
His love of football began in his childhood and continued during his time at East Carolina as an offensive lineman. In 1965 he was a member of the team that proudly represented the Pirates in the Tangerine Bowl under head coach Clarence Stasavich. He shared his passion for Pirate football with his children and grandchildren.
He spent 30 years as a beloved teacher, coach and drivers education instructor. He began his career at RM Wilson in Rocky Mount, moving on to Cape Fear High School in Cumberland County where he spent three years. From 1973 to 1975 he held the head basketball and track coaching positions along with serving as an assistant football coach at Northampton County High School. He returned to Cumberland County in 1975 to South View Senior High School as a biology teacher and coach. During his tenure at South View he coached basketball, football, track, cross country and tennis. He spent 20 years at South View and retired in 1996.
Retirement brought a move to the coast and Blounts Creek to pursue his love for all things fishing. Over the years family and friends have enjoyed spending time and creating memories on the banks Blounts Bay.
Coach Bobbitt is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Jerry Whitley Bobbitt; daughter Jennifer Bobbitt Ezzell, son-in-law Kenny of Trinity, NC and their daughters Katy of Hermosa Beach, CA and Krissy of Winston-Salem, NC; son John P. Bobbitt III, daughter-in-law Dawn, their son John P. Bobbitt IV (Perry) and daughter Kayleigh of Coats, NC; son Jeremy Bobbitt, daughter-in-law Robin and their sons Henry and William of Raleigh, NC; brother Brad Bobbitt, wife Jan of Rocky Mount, NC and sister Jenny Dent, husband Rick of Vero Beach, FL; as well as nieces and nephews.
