Mr. James Earl Gatling, age 90, passed away at his home in Tarboro on August 12, 2020.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Crawford Gatling. He is survived by two sons, Jim Gatling and wife Pam of Pahrump, NV; and Gary Gatling of Tarboro; one grandson, Christopher Gatling of Las Vegas, NV; one sister, Mary Virginia Borchers of Jonesboro, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
James Earl worked most of his career in the field of data processing, what we would call Information Technology today, and was a pioneer in the early use of this technology to automate how billing is accomplished when dealing with a large number of accounts. He served his country in the Navy during the Korean conflict. In retirement he spent much of his time doing volunteer work. He was and active member of the local chapter of the Kiwanis Club. He spent many hours working on the Tarboro Veterans Military Museum, spent time building homes for Habitat for Humanity, and was always ready to help a friend in need. He also played a mean game of golf!
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at 10 AM at Saint Michael’s Episcopal Church Cemetery. Afterwards there will be a time of celebrating his life at his home in Tarboro.
