Joyce Barnes Obituary

Joyce Marie Barnes, age 47, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 12th, 2020, at her home in Washington, D.C. Joyce was born June 19th, 1972, in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. She is the daughter of the late John Russell Barnes preceded in death on February 25th, 1992, and Mary M.C, Barnes, preceded in death on November 11th, 1997. She is the granddaughter of the late Golden and Frances Barnes of Fountain, N.C. and the late Smith and Mary Crandall of Stokes, N.C. (all preceded in death).

Joyce attended the Edgecombe County School system and is a graduate of Tarboro High School class of 1993. She acquired professional knowledge in the area of early childhood development, from Edgecombe Community College. However, her knowledge, skills, abilities, occupational pursuit, and passion were in the field of culinary arts. Joyce truly “lived life to the fullest”, through simple pleasures, of chatting with family and friends, cooking, snacking, dancing, and watching western movies. She was soulfully dedicated to her children and spending time with her nieces and nephews. She truly had an uncanny ability to reach people sincerely and positively. Her smile was full of “joy” and affection, one that could light up a room every time she entered it. Joyce had a resilient spirit, that led to her overcoming many life challenges one being, beating breast cancer in 2006.

Joyce is survived by two beautiful daughters, Gerica Battle and Jabrina Battle, both of Raleigh, NC, and one amazing son, Rashad Meliek Russell Crandall Barnes of Washington, D.C,; two loving grandchildren, Christopher Battle and Kinslee Battle (Jabrina) both of Raleigh, NC;  and significant family friend: Margie Battle of Tarboro, NC., two sisters, Sondra Elizabeth Barnes Avent (Tracey Avent, preceded in death) of Maryland and Dr. Frances Ruth Barnes Veale, (Kelvin Veale), of, New Jersey; two uncles, David Crandall (Dalphine) of Ayden N.C .and Jacob Crandall (Deborah) of Gardner, N.C.; five nieces: Daffny Auston, Kiarra Auston of Maryland and Nikki Hardy of North Carolina (preceded in death, June 11th, 1993), Sandra Avent, and Geneva Thomas-Avent, of Washington D.C., and one family pet “Minnie.” Ten great-nieces/nephews, Antonio, Devonne, Jeremiah, and Kyla Pope (mother Daffny), Jay’lin Washington and Jour’nee Jones (mother Kiarra) all of Maryland, Khloei, Khori, Karter Wilson and San’Juana Kerry (mother Sandra Avent) all of Washington D.C., and, in addition to a host of extended family and friends.
