Marilyn Coltrane Gammons, age 97, formerly of the Fountains at the Albemarle, Tarboro, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2018.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00am in Greenwood Cemetery on Friday, July 6, with the Reverend Benjamin E. E. Kane officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 5, from 6:00-8:00pm at the home of David and Debbie Gammons.

She was born in Smithfield, NC on May 25, 1921, daughter of the late Dr. Wallace Early Coltrane and Lucy Hood Coltrane. She attended Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va., and Women’s College UNC, of Greensboro. She was employed with First Citizen’s Bank at Ft. Bragg and with the United Civil Service commission as a stenographer in the Ordnance Department of the US Army at Ft. Bragg.

Marilyn was a member of Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and was active in the Women of the Church. She was a past member of the Tarboro Women’s Club and of the Edgecombe Garden Club. She has been a Gray Lady, enjoying serving at Heritage Hospital’s children’s and babies floors.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 58 years, Edgar Benjamin Gammons, son Gary Wallace Gammons; and sister, Doris Coltrane Grimes.  

She is survived by sons, E.B. Gammons, Jr., David H. Gammons and wife Debbie M. Gammons; daughter-in-law, Ann G. Gammons; six grandchildren, Laura Gammons, E.B. Gammons, III, John Gammons and wife Zandy, Austin Gammons, Taylor Gammons and wife Kelly, Will Gammons; and one great-grandson.
