Romaine Howard, Jr. passed away in the early hours of September 27th, 2023 in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina after a lengthy struggle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder.
Romaine, affectionally known as “Bubba”, was born on February 5th, 1948, the second child and only son of Romaine and Kathryn Hill Howard. He was reared in Tarboro, North Carolina, enjoying a childhood in the uncomplicated years of the nineteen-fifties.
He graduated high school from Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg, Florida. He graduated from St. Andrews College in Laurinburg, North Carolina. After graduation he worked for United Telephone, living in New Bern and Smithfield, North Carolina. In 1984 he moved with his family back to Tarboro to assist his father with the family farming operations.
Romaine is survived by his wife, Lillian DuBose Howard; their daughter, Lillian Marsh Howard; and their son, Romaine Howard, III. He is also survived by a sister, Katirie Howard Leach, and her husband, James Grist Leach; two nephews, Luther Howard Creech and Paul Parker Creech, Jr.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Howard Creech.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on October 12th in Greenwood Cemetery, Tarboro, North Carolina. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall of Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church.
