Vera Leiwana "Tieny" Rawls

Vera Leiwana Edmondson Rawls, 83, long time resident of Oak City, North Carolina went to be with her heavenly Father on Sunday, January 3, 2021. She was born on May 20, 1937 to Roy Sutton and Louise Matthews Edmondson. At the time of her birth, her brother nicknamed her Tieny and thereafter, that is what everyone called her.

Tieny graduated from Oak City High School in 1955. She was a long-time resident of Oak City except for a couple of years she lived in the Ahoskie area and Tarboro. She started to work and had a long career in the banking industry retiring from Branch Banking and Trust in 1999. Tieny was a lifelong member of Oak City Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and Church Treasurer for many years. She also served as a Town Commissioner in Oak City for several years.

Tieny was pre-deceased by her parents; brother, Roy Sutton Edmondson, Jr. (Marilyn); sister, Alice E. Wilson (Sam); and brother-in-law, Billy Hampton.

She is survived by her son, D. Lawrence Rawls, Jr. and wife, Julie; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Brown Autry of Lexington, KY, Sarah Alice Rawls of Raleigh and Mary Lawrence Rawls Whitby and husband, Caleb of Raleigh. She is also survived by her sister, Cherry Hampton of Oak City. Others include her nieces and nephews, Marilyn Hesser (Doug), Sutton Edmondson (Wanda), Abbey Whitford, Billy Hampton (Julie). Tieny is also survived by great nieces and nephews: Hannah, Matthew, Seth, Erin (Sean), Andrew, Hank (Katelyn), Schuyler, Milly, Ellie and great-great nephew, Henry.

Tieny had been in declining health and she appreciated the friendship, love and support of Sharon, Florence, Brenda and Queenie.

A walk-through visitation will take place at Oak City Baptist Church on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 from 5:00-7:00 PM. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, January 6 at 11:00 AM in Oak City Cemetery with the Pastor Louis Cook, Jr. and former Pastor Lyle Bracken officiating. The family will receive friends at other times at the home of her son Lawrence, 1368 NC 111, Oak City.
